Guwahati: Veteran broadcaster Lily Das Malik, regarded as one of the most recognisable voices of Assamese radio journalism, passed away in Bengaluru on Sunday night. She was 90.

Malik breathed her last at around 8:15 pm on May 3, family sources said.

She was widely known as the first Assamese woman newsreader of All India Radio (AIR) and remained a pioneering figure in the evolution of Assamese electronic media. During an era when radio served as the primary source of news and public information across the Northeast, her voice became closely associated with Assamese news broadcasting.

Over the decades, Malik earned immense respect among listeners for her clear diction, commanding delivery and contribution to public broadcasting. Her broadcasts resonated across households in Assam at a time when AIR played a central role in shaping public discourse and connecting communities.

Despite her popularity on radio, Malik largely stayed away from television appearances and maintained a low public profile in later years.

Her death has triggered an outpouring of condolences from journalists, former colleagues, admirers and members of the media fraternity, many of whom remembered her as one of the defining voices of Assamese broadcasting’s golden era.

Malik’s contribution to Assamese journalism and radio broadcasting continues to be remembered as a significant chapter in the history of media in the region.
