Doomdooma: Three members of a family were swept away by strong river currents at Silikha Ghat River under Hatijan Gaon Panchayat in the Makum constituency in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Friday, following a rescue attempt.

One body has been recovered so far.

According to local sources, the incident occurred when Shankar Kalandi (33) of Silikha Tea Estate allegedly jumped into the river under circumstances that are not yet known.

In an attempt to save him, his wife Anita Kalandi (32) and elder sister Regina Kalandi Gor (34) of Digboi Powai Tea Estate also entered the water.

All three were caught in the strong current and went missing in the river.

Local residents rushed to the spot and informed the authorities after the incident.

Teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and district administration officials launched a search and rescue operation in the area.

During the operation, the body of Anita Kalandi was recovered from the river. Search operations are continuing for Shankar Kalandi and Regina Kalandi Gor.

The incident has caused grief in the Makum region. Residents have expressed sorrow and are praying for the recovery of the missing persons.

Public representatives and local organisations have also expressed condolences and urged authorities to intensify the rescue efforts.
