The Principal and a professor of Dhakuwakhona College have been suspended by the governing body of the college following the suicide committed by a HS first year student .

Dulen Chutiya, a student of Higher Secondary First Year (Science) committed suicide on Wednesday following a punishment he had received from the Principal and the professor over an alleged eve teasing incident. Dulen was accused of teasing a girl student of the college for which Principal Dr Jogananda Sut and professor Khanindra Das slapped him publicly and confiscated his identity card.

Following the incident the student returned to his rented house and hanged himself with a note asking forgiveness from the Principal. The incident infuriated the fellow students of the college who went to Dhakuwakhona Police Station demanding arrest of the Principal. They gheraoed the police station till late in the night and dispersed on police assurance of taking care of their requests.

Alleging police complicity the agitating students of the college demonstrated in Dhakuwakhona vandalizing shops, government offices and vehicles and blocked roads by burning tyres. Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Dr Jeevan B and Superintendent of Police Sudhakar Singh rushed to Dhakuwakhona to oversee the situation. Later on Friday, DIG-Northern Range, Lachit Baruah visited Dhakuwakhona and assured the students of taking proper investigation into the whole incident. He visited the victim’s home at Bhoma-Chutiagaon along with the DC and SP of Lakhimpur district.

Later an emergent meeting of the governing body of Dhakuwakhona College took resolution to suspend Principal Dr Sut and professor Khanin Dutta.
