Imphal: An exchange of gunfire broke out between armed volunteers from the Naga and Kuki communities in Manipurโs Ukhrul district on Thursday afternoon, prompting security forces to rush to the area, reports said.
The incident took place at the inter-village boundaries of Sharkapung and Mongkot Chephu under Litan Police Station at around 2:30 pm.
According to reports, armed Kuki militants allegedly opened fire from nearby Mongkot Chephu village targeting Sharkapung village after a lull of nearly 20 days in hostilities in the area.
Naga village guards reportedly retaliated after the armed group attempted to advance towards the village. The exchange of fire lasted for around 20 minutes.
State and Central security forces were deployed to the area to bring the situation under control. Officials said the situation remained tense and security personnel were on high alert to prevent further violence.
The latest incident comes amid continuing tensions between armed groups and village volunteers in parts of Ukhrul district. Between April and mid-May 2026, at least seven people from the Naga and Kuki-Zo communities were killed in ethnic violence in the district.
