Imphal: Manipur Police arrested two women and seized hundreds of Spasmo-Proxyvon (SP) capsules during an anti-drug operation in the southern Kakching district, officials said on Wednesday.
Acting on intelligence inputs, a team from Kakching Police conducted the operation in the Pallel Laimanai Chingjin area under Kakching Police Station and apprehended the two women with 288 SP capsules and two mobile phones.
The accused were identified as Th. Vini (52) and Ayola Shinglai (55), both residents of Liwa Leikun village in Chandel district.
Police said the women were unable to produce valid documents for possession of the capsules during questioning.
Spasmo-Proxyvon abuse continues to remain a major public health concern in Manipur. Originally prescribed as a painkiller and antispasmodic medicine, the drug is widely abused for its opioid and euphoric effects and is often used as a substitute for illegal narcotics.
Officials said the illegal trade in SP capsules has contributed to rising addiction levels in the state, particularly among youths, adolescents and school students.
The arrested women have been booked under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and handed over to the concerned police station along with the seized items.
