Assam Lok Bhavan celebrated Sikkim Statehood Day, highlighting the stateโ€™s achievements in sustainability and development.

Guwahati: Sikkim Statehood Day was observed at Assam Lok Bhavan on May 16 as part of the โ€˜Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharatโ€™ initiative, under the leadership of Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya.

Speaking at the event, the Governor conveyed his greetings to the people of Sikkim and described the state as a beacon of peace, development, environmental stewardship and national pride. He noted that Sikkim has become a model of sustainable development by emerging as Indiaโ€™s first fully organic state, proving that economic progress and environmental conservation can go hand in hand.

Acharya also praised the stateโ€™s advancements in eco-tourism, organic farming and the pharmaceutical industry. Reflecting on his tenure as Governor of Sikkim, he said the warmth, simplicity and strong environmental consciousness of the people continue to remain among his fondest memories.

Highlighting the role of women in nation-building, the Governor stated that Sikkim has set exemplary standards in encouraging womenโ€™s participation in education, entrepreneurship, self-help groups and public affairs.

Referring to the spirit of the โ€˜Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharatโ€™ initiative, Acharya said Indiaโ€™s greatest strength lies in its unity amid diversity. He stressed the need to inspire younger generations to learn about and appreciate the traditions, culture, and heritage of different states across the country.

The Governor also acknowledged the achievements of several eminent personalities from Sikkim who have brought recognition and pride to the nation through their contributions.

The programme was attended by Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor SS Meenakshi Sundaram, Assistant Resident Commissioner of Sikkim Jashoda Chettri, along with officials and staff members of Lok Bhavan.
