Guwahati: After the Assam Assembly election results, differences within the opposition camp have become more visible, with tensions emerging between Raijor Dal led by Akhil Gogoi and the Congress party.
Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, on Friday, spoke to reporters and reacted strongly to recent comments made by Akhil Gogoi. He said, โWe are disappointed by Akhil Gogoiโs remarks. What he is saying now sounds similar to what the Chief Minister said before and after the elections. His public behaviour is raising doubts among people.โ
He also spoke about the partyโs political alliances, saying, โOur partnership with AJP, CPI(M) and APHCL remains firm and unchanged.โ At the same time, he suggested that Raijor Dalโs recent statements indicate a possible shift in its political stance and hinted that it may be moving away from the broader opposition alignment.
Gogoi said that Congress leaders had recently held discussions with both newly elected and senior legislators. He also said the partyโs influence in the opposition space had reduced after the election outcome. He further accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of continuing to attack the Congress after the BJPโs victory.
Speaking on governance, he said the state government was not focusing on key public issues. He said, โAssam is facing several serious issues, but the government is not focusing on them. Problems like artificial flooding, syndicate activities, and lack of opportunities for children need urgent attention.โ
He added that attempts were being made to weaken the Congress politically but said the party must continue to play its role as the main opposition. He said, โPeople have given them the mandate to function; they should concentrate on that duty.โ
Gogoi also said the Congress was currently reviewing its election performance to assess both strengths and weaknesses, and reaffirmed that the party would work to strengthen its opposition role.
He expressed concern that Akhil Gogoiโs statements were creating confusion about opposition unity. He said, โIt appears he has already decided his political direction. We are also clear about our path ahead.โ
He further alleged that Raijor Dal was not behaving like a typical opposition party and was also criticising other opposition groups.
In his concluding remark, Gogoi said Akhil Gogoiโs political tone sometimes resembled that of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, adding that both leaders were increasingly adopting a confrontational style in Assam politics.
