Assam Assembly Election Himanta Biswa sarma
Himanta Biswa Sarma tenders resignation to the Governor, paving the way for formation of a new government after the election results.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, marking the beginning of the process to form a new government after the NDAโ€™s strong victory in the Assembly elections.

The resignation came shortly after the Chief Electoral Officer formally submitted the election results to the Governor, following constitutional procedure required before government formation.

The National Democratic Alliance secured a third consecutive term in Assam, winning 102 out of 126 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party led the alliance with 82 seats, while allies Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland Peoples Front won 10 seats each.

Himanta Biswa Sarma is expected to be re-elected as leader of the BJP legislature party. A meeting of newly elected BJP MLAs is under the supervision of central observers J. P. Nadda and Baijayant Panda, to finalise the leadership decision.

Following this, the Governor is expected to invite the NDA to form the next government.

Sarma also pointed out that the Indian National Congress, despite winning 19 seats, may fall short of the 22 seat requirement needed to claim the post of Leader of the Opposition. If so, the Assembly may not have a formally recognised opposition leader, though parties will still appoint their own legislative leaders.
