Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court has directed the Assam government and civic authorities to take urgent steps to deal with the recurring problem of artificial flooding in Guwahati.
The authorities have also been asked to submit a report on the action taken before the next hearing of the case.
The Court began hearing the matter after taking suo motu cognizance of a petition highlighting the cityโs worsening flood and waterlogging situation. The petition was filed by advocate Sandeep Chamaria.
During the proceedings, the Court expressed concern over uncovered drains and manholes in different parts of Guwahati, saying they pose a serious threat to public safety.
It instructed the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), the State government, and other concerned departments to immediately cover exposed drains, manholes, and sewer channels to prevent accidents.
The Court also pointed out the danger during heavy rainfall, when flooded roads often make open drains difficult to spot, putting people at risk.
The petition stated that poor drainage systems, encroachment on water bodies, waterlogging, and unplanned urban growth are among the key reasons behind the cityโs recurring artificial floods.
The plea also referred to the April 19 incident in Maligaon, where a woman reportedly died after falling into an uncovered drain during heavy rain, further highlighting the seriousness of the issue.
The Bench observed that Guwahatiโs flood crisis requires a lasting remedy and asked the authorities to formulate a clear and practical strategy for its resolution.
Further hearing in the case will take place on May 12.
