Guwahati: Guwahati witnessed major disruption after intense rainfall on Sunday, April 19, leading to widespread waterlogging across the city and bringing normal life to a standstill.
Several areas reported heavy water accumulation, with roads and localities submerged, causing serious inconvenience for residents and commuters.
In Hatigaon, major roads were inundated, with water levels rising up to knee-deep and key stretches submerged under what residents described as โartificial flooding.โ Vehicles remained stranded for hours on waterlogged streets, resulting in long traffic snarls.
Localities such as Six Mile, Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar, HengrabariโGaneshguri, and the Beltola-Survey Road stretch were among the worst affected, with floodwaters entering homes and causing significant hardship.
The situation turned more alarming in Maligaon, where a young woman is feared to have been swept away by a fast-moving drain during the heavy rain. Search operations are currently underway, while rescue and emergency teams remain active across the city.
As waterlogging continued to affect large parts of the city, concerns have once again been raised over drainage infrastructure, with even a brief spell of rain exposing its vulnerability to urban flooding.
In view of the situation, the Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration has ordered the closure of all educational institutions on April 20.
An official notice issued by the District Disaster Management Authority stated that both government and private schools and colleges within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation limits will remain shut as a precautionary measure.
Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain cautious as officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
