Guwahati: BJP candidate from Dispur, Pradyut Bordoloi, on Monday voiced confidence that the saffron party is set to return to power in Assam for a third consecutive term.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Bordoloi said there is a clear pro-BJP sentiment across the state. โNot just in my constituency, but across Assam, there is a strong atmosphere in favour of the BJP forming the government for the third time. We are closely tracking feedback from different regions,โ he said.
Referring to the ongoing counting process, he added that early trends indicate a favourable outcome for the party. โCounting is underway in my constituency, and it is becoming increasingly evident that the BJP will once again form the government. Elections often see multi-cornered contests involving two, three, or even four candidates, so patience is important,โ he noted.
A former Nagaon MP who was previously with the Indian National Congress, Bordoloi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.
According to the latest trends, Bordoloi is leading by 24,906 votes in Dispur, with his nearest rival, Mira Borthakur of the Congress, trailing by 20,055 votes.
Counting of votes began at 8 a.m. across Assam, where 722 candidates are contesting from 126 Assembly constituencies. The process is being conducted at 40 counting centres across 35 districts, with candidates, observers, and supporters closely monitoring the results.
Several high-profile leaders are in the fray. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is contesting from Jalukbari, aiming for a third consecutive win. State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi is seeking to enter the Assembly from Jorhat. Badruddin Ajmal is contesting from Binnakandi, while Akhil Gogoi is defending his seat in Sibsagar. Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary is contesting from Tamulpur.
The BJP-led NDA alliance includes key partners such as the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodo Peoples Front. The BJP has fielded 90 candidates, while the AGP and BPF have nominated 26 and 11 candidates, respectively.
On the other hand, the opposition alliance is led by the Congress, which has fielded 99 candidates, along with parties such as Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and All Party Hill Leaders Conference.
