Guwahati: The BJP is set for a third consecutive term in Assam, leading in 99 of the 126 Assembly constituencies as per Election Commission trends, signalling a sweeping mandate for the ruling NDA.
According to the latest party-wise breakdown, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 63 seats and is leading in 19, taking its total to 82. The Indian National Congress (INC) has won 5 seats and is leading in 14, taking its tally to 19. The Bodoland Peopleโs Front (BPF) has won 7 seats and is leading in 3, totalling 10, while the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has also secured 10 seats with 5 wins and 5 leads.
The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has won 1 seat and is leading in another, taking its total to 2, while Raijor Dal has also secured 2 seats with 1 win and 1 lead. The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) is leading in 1 constituency.
Among key results, Assam minister Pijush Hazarika retained Jagiroad by a massive margin of 93,584 votes over Congress candidate Bubul Das. Minister Ranoj Pegu won Dhemaji by 32,229 votes, while BJP veteran Hitendra Nath Goswami defeated Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi in Jorhat by 23,182 votes, marking a major setback for the Opposition.
Cabinet minister and BPF leader Charan Boro retained Mazbat, defeating his nearest JMM rival by over 55,000 votes. BJPโs Bhuban Gam won Majuli by 35,300 votes, while Munindra Das secured Behali with a 60,703-vote margin over CPI(ML) Liberationโs Gyanendra Sarkar. In Tangla, BJPโs Bikan Chandra Deka won by 54,601 votes, defeating Congress candidate Rohit Pariga.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also established a commanding lead of 73,750 votes in Jalukbari.
In another major blow to the Opposition, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia has lost in Nazira.
Other senior BJP leaders, including ministers Ranoj Pegu, Pijush Hazarika, Ashok Singhal, Prasanta Phukan, Bimal Borah and Chandramohan Patowary, are also leading in their constituencies. AGP president Atul Bora and working president Keshab Mahanta are ahead in Bokakhat and Kaliabor respectively.
Among allies, BPF is leading in multiple seats, including Kokrajhar where Sewli Mohilary is ahead.
Counting began at 8 am with postal ballots and is being conducted across 40 centres in 35 districts, with multiple centres in Nagaon, Kokrajhar, Tinsukia and Jorhat. Voting for all 126 constituencies was held in a single phase on April 9, recording a turnout of 85.96 per cent.
