Shillong masjid tension
The group said the structure, identified as Lumparing Masjid, did not have approval from the local dorbar shnong or any concerned authority before being set up.

Guwahati: Shillong witnessed unrest on Tuesday, April 14, after the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laban Circle intervened to stop construction activity at Lower Lumparing, alleging the site was being used for religious purposes without required approval.

The group said the structure, identified as Lumparing Masjid, did not have approval from the local dorbar shnong or any concerned authority before being set up.

Laban Circle leader Shiningstar Chyne alleged that the construction was carried out on disputed land, with ownership yet to be properly verified.

He further stated that the site was earlier intended to house a chowkidar for a nearby Muslim burial ground but was later repurposed.

Members of the union asked the person acting as imam at the site to leave, claiming he was staying there without approval and conducting religious activities.

The student body said that local traditional authorities had earlier examined complaints and concluded that the structure should be removed.

However, no action was taken to implement the decision.

The organisation has now decided to take up the matter with higher authorities and seek the complete removal of the structure.
