Guwahati police Summon AJP candidate Kunki Chowdhury
Police have summoned AJP candidate Kunki Chowdhury for questioning over an alleged MCC violation during the Assam Assembly elections.

Guwahati: Guwahati Police has summoned Opposition alliance candidate Kunki Chowdhury to appear before the investigating officer in connection with an alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during the ongoing Assam Assembly election.

27-year-old Kunki Chowdhury, a candidate of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and an ally of the Congress, is contesting from the Guwahati Central constituency. She is among the youngest candidates in the fray. She has denied all allegations.

The Officer-in-Charge of Panbazar Police Station issued a notice on Saturday directing Chowdhury to appear before investigators in connection with the case.

According to the notice issued under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), Chowdhury has been asked to appear at the police station at 11:00 AM on Sunday (April 12, 2026) for questioning. The notice states that her presence is required to โ€œascertain facts and circumstancesโ€ related to Panbazar Police Station Case No. 74/26.

The case has been registered under Sections 223(a) and 174 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with provisions of the Representation of the People Act, pertaining to alleged violations of election norms.

Police have imposed conditions directing Kunki Chowdhury not to tamper with evidence, influence witnesses, or commit any further offences. She has also been instructed to cooperate fully with the investigation, disclose all relevant facts truthfully, and produce necessary documents as required.

The notice further warns that failure to comply or appear before the investigating officer could lead to her arrest under provisions of the BNSS.

The FIR was registered based on a complaint filed by BJP worker Naba Kumar Lahkar against Chowdhury and her social media head Sandeep Yadav, alleging violations of the MCC. Chowdhury has denied the charges.

The complaint, invoking various provisions of the BNS and the Representation of the People Act (1950, 1951, and 1989), was filed shortly after polling concluded at 5 PM on Thursday.

Three members of her social media team were detained for questioning late Thursday night and released on Friday evening.

Chowdhury, who is making her electoral debut against BJP veteran Vijay Kumar Gupta, has been in the spotlight during the campaign, particularly after repeated attacks by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Reacting to the development, Chowdhury strongly refuted the allegations, asserting that her campaign strictly adhered to all election guidelines.

โ€œI have been informed that an FIR has been lodged against me and my social media team, alleging that we violated democratic norms on polling day. I would like to state clearly that we have adhered to all rules and regulations,โ€ she said in a video statement shared on social media.
