Guwahati: The Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has expressed deep concern over what it described as a sustained smear campaign against its party candidate for the 36 Guwahati Central Assembly constituency, Kunki Chowdhury.

In a press statement, Samsher Singh, Vice President of AJP and Chief Convenor of the Election Management Committee, and Ziaur Rahman, Secretary of AJP and Convenor of the Election Management Committee, said that Chowdhury, a young and highly educated candidate representing the new generation, has received widespread public support since the announcement of her candidature. The party highlighted her commitment, integrity, and strong connection with the people as reflective of a vision for a progressive and self-reliant Assam.

However, the party alleged that certain vested interests, unsettled by her growing popularity, have resorted to unethical tactics. These include circulating misleading images and false narratives on both mainstream and social media, with the apparent intent of maligning her personal reputation and that of her family.

Calling the campaign โ€œdeeply condemnable,โ€ the AJP leaders stated that such actions are not merely attacks on an individual candidate but also undermine democratic values. โ€œPolitical competition must be based on principles, policies, and public serviceโ€”not on personal attacks, slander, or intimidation,โ€ they said.

They further emphasised that targeting a candidateโ€™s family or personal life runs contrary to the cultural ethos of Assamese society, which upholds dignity, respect, and fairness.

Expressing confidence in the people of Assam, Singh and Rahman said voters are aware and discerning, and will reject divisive and negative politics. The party reiterated its commitment to standing firmly with Kunki Chowdhury and her family during this period.

The AJP leaders also urged all political parties and stakeholders to maintain decorum and uphold the sanctity of the democratic process.
