Imphal: The Manipur government has extended the suspension of mobile internet and data services, including VPN access, in five districts for another two days amid the prevailing law and order situation.

According to an order issued by the State Home Department, the restrictions will continue in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts with effect from 2 p.m. on April 10.

Officials said the decision followed a review of the ground situation and the need to maintain public order. The government expressed concern over the possible spread of misinformation and rumours through social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and X, which could trigger mobilisation of crowds and lead to violence, arson or damage to property.

The order was issued under Rule 3 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024, with the approval of the Governor. Authorities noted that monitoring mobile data services effectively remains a challenge, necessitating the continuation of restrictions.

The state had earlier imposed a three-day suspension of mobile internet services from 2 p.m. on April 7. While broadband services, including Internet Leased Line (ILL) and Fiber to the Home (FTTH), were partially restored on April 8 under certain conditions, restrictions on mobile internet have remained in force.

The order has been issued on an emergency basis and will be communicated to the public through print and electronic media. The government has warned that any violation will attract action under relevant legal provisions.
