Agartala: Tipra Motha Party supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman on Monday reiterated that his party would not enter into any alliance without clear assurances on safeguarding the interests of the indigenous Tiprasa community, amid ongoing speculation of a possible tie-up with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections.
The elections to the TTAADC are scheduled for April 12, with results to be declared on April 17.
Debbarmanโs remarks come at a time when leaders from both Tipra Motha and the BJP have issued mixed signals regarding a potential alliance. While both parties are part of the ruling coalition in the state, they remain political rivals within the TTAADC, where Tipra Motha is in power and the BJP is the principal opposition.
Initial expectations of a joint contest have given way to uncertainty, with Debbarmanโs latest statement indicating a possible shift in political positioning ahead of the polls.
In a social media interaction, Debbarman said his primary allegiance lies with his community rather than any political formation, stressing that no alliance would be considered without firm guarantees protecting the rights and interests of the Tiprasa people.
He also appealed to members of the community, particularly the youth, to remain united across party lines and focus on advancing collective interests. At the same time, he urged party workers to maintain peace and refrain from any form of violence during the election period.
Debbarman expressed confidence that the electoral outcome would reflect the strength and unity of the community, despite its relatively smaller demographic presence.
Reports have suggested that leaders from both parties have engaged in discussions in New Delhi over a possible seat-sharing arrangement, though no formal announcement has been made so far.
