Guwahati: With the 2026 Assam Assembly elections drawing closer, political parties have begun unveiling their electoral strategies, including the announcement of candidates for key constituencies.
Among the latest to release their nominees are the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the All Party Hill Leadersโ Conference (APHLC), both gearing up to contest crucial seats in the upcoming polls.
The APHLC has announced candidates for two constituencies in Karbi Anglong district. The party has fielded its president John Ingti Kathar from the Diphu Assembly constituency, while Bikram Hanse has been nominated to contest from the Amri seat.
The APHLC, which has a political presence in the hill districts of Assam and neighbouring Meghalaya, represents the interests of tribal communities in the hill districts.
Meanwhile, the CPI(M) has also announced candidates for two constituencies as part of the oppositionโs broader effort to challenge the BJP-led alliance in the state.
The party has nominated Bapu Ram Boro, a retired headmaster and senior party leader, as its candidate for the No. 44 Goreswar Assembly constituency.
For the No. 21 BhawanipurโSorbhog constituency, the CPI(M) has fielded Manoranjan Talukdar, the sitting MLA and a senior Communist leader in the state.
The announcements are part of a wider seat-sharing arrangement among opposition parties aimed at presenting a united front in the Assembly elections.
With more parties expected to unveil their candidates in the coming days, the political contest in Assam is set to intensify as the state moves closer to the polls.
