Imphal: A 51-year-old man was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at Keirak Makha Leikai under Kakching Police Station in Manipur’s Kakching district on Friday night, officials said on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Chingakham Malemnganba Meitei (51), son of Parijat Meitei and a resident of Tejpur Awang Leikai in Kakching district.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Kakching district police, accompanied by forensic experts, rushed to the scene and recovered the body. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, police said. Authorities added that the motive behind the killing remains unclear and is currently under investigation.
So far, no individual or outfit has claimed responsibility for the incident.
Meanwhile, a Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the killing of Chingakham Malemnganba Meitei has been formed. The committee strongly condemned the incident, describing it as an inhuman and barbaric act committed against an innocent citizen.
Under the aegis of the JAC, a sit-in protest was organised at Tejpur Primary School in Kakching/Keirak, demanding that authorities conduct a thorough, impartial and time-bound investigation into the killing and identify all those involved by March 16, 2026.
The JAC stated that neither the family members nor the committee would claim the body of the deceased until the culprits are identified and arrested. It also warned that democratic forms of agitation would be launched if justice is delayed.
