Guwahati: The discovery of a hidden camera in the bathroom of a girls’ hostel at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Guwahati campus in Jalukbari, has sparked concern among students, prompting a police investigation.

The device was reportedly noticed on Tuesday when a student spotted a suspicious object while using the hostel bathroom. Upon closer inspection, it was found to be a concealed camera. The incident led to unrest among students, who demanded immediate action and accountability from the institute to safeguard their privacy and security.

TISS authorities have since lodged a First Information Report (FIR), and Guwahati Police have initiated an investigation.

In a statement, the TISS Guwahati administration described the incident as a “serious privacy violation and is entirely unacceptable and condemnable.” The institute said it has filed a police complaint and is fully cooperating with the investigation.

“All measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in future, and an internal review of security protocols has been initiated,” the statement said.

The administration further stated that it stands in solidarity with the affected students and that support services have been put in place. “TISS Guwahati stands in solidarity with all the students and support services are in place for the most affected students. The institute remains committed to ensuring a safe, secure, and respectful campus environment for all students. We request that all media and stakeholders respect the privacy of the students while reporting on this matter,” it added.

Police said further details would emerge as the investigation progresses.
