Guwahati: Dhirendra Nath Chakraborty, a prominent figure in Assamese journalism, passed away at the age of 98 on Sunday, February 22. He had been hospitalized in Guwahati since February 19 and died at 7:35 a.m.

Chakrabortyโ€™s journalism career spanned several decades, during which he led major publications including Ajir Batori, Dainik Asom, Raijor Batori, and Dainik Janmabhumi. He became editor of Ajir Batori in 1991 and later managed multiple weekly journals, significantly influencing Assamโ€™s media scene.

At the time of his death, he was serving as Chief Editor of the weekly Pragjyotish and had previously held the role of Director in the Public Relations Department.

In 2019, he was honoured with the Republic Day Journalism Award for his decades-long dedication to accurate and impactful reporting. Colleagues recall his work as both thoughtful and influential, shaping public discussions and nurturing younger reporters who entered Assamโ€™s media landscape under his guidance.

Chakraborty was also active beyond journalism. He served as president of the Assam Senior Citizensโ€™ Association and was the founding president of the Kamrup Metropolitan District Sahitya Sabha, promoting cultural and literary activities in the state.

Peers described him as a mentor and guiding presence whose commitment to professional ethics and community-focused reporting left a lasting mark on Assamโ€™s journalism and literature.
