Guwahati: Several leaders of the Uttar Pradesh Congress, on Thursday, February 19, 2026, claimed that police across multiple districts are refusing to file complaints against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The complaints seek First Information Reports (FIRs) regarding Sarmaโs alleged remarks, which the party says are communal and unconstitutional, intended to sow discord among communities.
Congress national secretary Shahnawaz Alam, who is leading the campaign, stated that the party is striving to register at least 100 FIRs against Sarma for his repeated controversial statements.
โThese remarks challenge the principles of Indiaโs constitution, encourage division, and could provoke communal tension. Yet, in many areas, police are refusing to accept complaints, which is the first step toward FIR registration. Complaints have been accepted in around 20 locations, and we are waiting for the FIRs to be officially filed. Failing that, we will approach the courts,โ Alam said.
Alam also appealed to the judiciary to take suo motu action regarding the alleged statements. โThe matter has significant public importance, and it is imperative that the courts intervene to ensure accountability,โ he added.
