Imphal: Security forces arrested three active members of different underground outfits in a series of coordinated anti-insurgency operations across the valley districts on Wednesday. The suspects were allegedly involved in recruiting youth into insurgent groups and carrying out extortion activities, officials said on Thursday.
A two-wheeler, communication devices and incriminating documents were recovered during the operations.
In the first operation, security personnel apprehended an active cadre of the proscribed Peopleโs Liberation Army (PLA), identified as Laishram Basanta Singh alias Ratan alias Ithoi (53) of Thoubal Wangkhem Mayai. He was arrested from the Khangabok area under Thoubal Police Station.
According to officials, Singh was engaged in recruiting cadres for the banned outfit, monitoring the movement of security forces and sharing intelligence inputs with his handlers.
In a separate operation, police arrested Haobam Bijoy alias Nanao alias Joy (37), an active cadre of the banned United National Liberation Front (Koireng group), from his residence at Lamlongei Maning Leikai under Lamshang Police Station. A mobile phone and an Aadhaar card were seized from his possession.
In another operation, security forces apprehended Huiningsumbam Suresh Meitei alias Kalambus alias Lion (34) of Singjamei Chinga Makha, who was allegedly involved in extortion on behalf of the Kangleipak Communist PartyโPeopleโs War Group (KCP-PWG). A two-wheeler and a mobile phone were recovered from him.
Officials said further investigation is underway.
