Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Wednesday called for the phased resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) currently housed in relief camps across the state, particularly those displaced from Churachandpur, Moreh and parts of Imphal, and said the government was preparing a comprehensive rehabilitation plan to facilitate their return to their original homes.

Large numbers of Meitei families from Moreh and Churachandpur, as well as Kuki-Zo residents from Imphal valley areas, were forced to flee following the outbreak of ethnic violence on May 3, 2023, and have since been living in temporary relief camps.

The Chief Minister made the announcement while addressing a reception programme held at the residence of Sanasam Premchandra Singh, MLA of Kumbi Assembly Constituency, in Bishnupur district.

Highlighting ongoing infrastructure initiatives, Singh said construction of the Moirangโ€“Wangoo road via Kumbi would commence within the next 15 days, reiterating the governmentโ€™s commitment to accelerating development projects across the state. He also announced that work on the Napat Bridge would begin on Thursday and is expected to be completed within five days.

During the event, the Chief Minister directed Bishnupur Deputy Commissioner Pooja Elangbam to submit a detailed progress report on the construction of prefabricated housing units being developed for displaced families in the district.

Later in the day, Singh was accorded a warm reception by residents of the Thanga Assembly Constituency at Kairenphabi village, where he was received by local MLA T. Robindro Singh. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister assured residents that their grievances would be reviewed personally and that the government would extend all possible support to ensure balanced development of the constituency.

The reception functions were attended by senior district officials, including Bishnupur Superintendent of Police Th. Shangkar Deba, along with community leaders and residents from both the Kumbi and Thanga Assembly Constituencies.
