Imphal: The Manipur government imposed Section 122 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, following tension that gripped Litan along the ImphalโUkhrul road. The tension arose after a man from the Tangkhul Naga community and another from the Kuki community got into a fight.
The incident occurred in the Litan Sareikhong area under Litan police station in Manipurโs Ukhrul district on the night of February 7, officials reported on Monday.
The Ukhrul district magistrate promulgated Section 122 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which deals with voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt on grave and sudden provocation. The provision replaces Sections 334 and 335 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The injured person has been identified as AS Sterling, son of late AS Paoshim of Sarkaphung village in Ukhrul. Following the incident, there were reports of several rounds of bullets being fired by members of the two communities, creating fear and panic in the area, though no injuries were reported.
Police said an FIR has been lodged and investigations are underway.
Meanwhile, the Litan Sareikhong village authority condemned the violence and urged all parties not to communalise what was originally a minor altercation involving a few intoxicated individuals.
Reaffirming its commitment to resolving the dispute through dialogue, customary practices, and lawful means, the village authority called for calm and communal harmony in the village.
