Imphal: A team of the Narcotics and Affairs of Border foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs from Manipur to Assam by arresting a 46-year-old man and seizing 15.556 kilograms of brown sugar from the North AOC area under Imphal Police Station in Manipur’s Imphal West district.
A Tata truck bearing an Assam registration number was also impounded.
Md Sabir Ahamed (46), a resident of Lilong Nungei in Thoubal district, was arrested on February 2, 2026, based on information received about banned drugs being transported from Lilong Nungei to Guwahati in a truck, police reported on Wednesday.
He was produced before a court in Imphal West on Tuesday. During the court proceedings, the prosecutor stated that six packets of brown sugar weighing a total of 15.556 kilograms were kept concealed in one of the spare tyres of the vehicle and were recovered based on his interrogation.
The prosecutor further stated that Md Sabir revealed the involvement of another person, identified as Sahi Khan, who is currently evading the police.
However, a mobile phone belonging to Sahi Khan was seized during a search operation at his residence in Thoubal district.
After hearing the submissions, the court remanded the accused, Md Sabir, to police custody till February 9, 2026.
