Guwahati: The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has ordered the immediate relocation of several government offices and institutions operating on Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) land at Kheroni in West Karbi Anglong.

In a directive issued by the KAAC Land and Revenue Department, the Council reiterated its firm stance against the use of grazing reserve land for non-agricultural or administrative purposes. As per the order, 11 major departments and services functioning on the Kheroni PGR land have been asked to vacate the area within 15 days. These include the Kheroni Police Station, post office, banking institutions, electricity and irrigation departments, along with other government establishments.

According to officials, nearly 265 government offices and state-run schemes are currently operating within the Kheroni PGR area. However, the Council clarified that educational institutions have been temporarily exempted from the relocation directive.

The move follows a recent eviction drive carried out by the Karbi Anglong district administration to reclaim government land under the Bakaliaghat Irrigation Department. During the operation, long-standing illegal encroachments were removed from the area.

Officials said around 350 bighas of land had been unlawfully occupied, with over 755 houses constructed over the years, sheltering a population of more than 2,000 people. A mosque located within the encroached area was also demolished during the eviction drive.
