Imphal: Manipur Police have taken four suspects into custody in connection with the suspicious death of Khaidem (Ongbi Chanambam) Chaoba Devi, a 27-year-old housewife, at Thiyam Leishangkhong, under the jurisdiction of Wangoi Police Station in Imphal West district.
Police had earlier detained the husband of the deceased, Khaidem Nareshwor (29), son of Ingocha, and his mother, Khaidem (Ongbi) Indira, both residents of Wangoi Mamang Khaidem Leikai in Imphal West district.
Police arrested two more persons on Sunday, identified as Moirangthem Dhanajit (28) of Langathel Bazar (presently staying at Nongpok Keithelmanbi Awang Leikai) and Sh Kananbala Devi alias Dhaneshwori (41) of Yairipok Wangkhem in Thoubal district, in connection with the case.
They were produced before the duty magistrate of Imphal West and remanded to police custody until January 5.
Chaoba Devi was found dead under suspicious circumstances on the afternoon of December 27 near her residence at Thiyam Leishangkhong, under Wangoi Police Station. She had gone missing on the night of December 26.
Following the suspicious death, a Joint Action Committee (JAC) was formed, and the committee organised a sit-in protest on December 28 at Iramsiphai Leirak Ashangba Community Hall, demanding the arrest of all those involved in the alleged killing of Chaoba Devi.
Speaking to the media, JAC convenor S Sanajaoba stated that they suspect foul play in the death of Chaoba Devi.
He urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the case, adding that the woman’s body, currently lying at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital, Imphal, will not be claimed until justice is served.
