Imphal: Locals pelted stones at police and stopped a police hearse after a 25-year-old housewife died under suspicious circumstances in Manipur’s Imphal West district, amid allegations of foul play by her husband and in-laws.

The protesters, mostly women, demonstrated with the body of the deceased, alleging that she had been murdered by her husband, and blocked the police team.

In response, police fired tear gas and carried out aerial shots to disperse the crowd.

The incident occurred at Wangoi Mangang Khaidem Leikai under Wangoi police station in Imphal West district on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The deceased has been identified as Khaidem Ongbi Chanambam Chaoba Devi (25), wife of Khaidem Dhaneshore, also known as Boynaocha (28).

Locals reported that her body was found near her house at around 3:30 pm on Saturday.

While the police team awaited forensic experts for a detailed investigation, maternal relatives of the deceased and other locals of Wangoi staged protests, initially attacking those detained by police in connection with the case.

With the arrival of additional forces, police were able to bring the situation under control.

The case is currently under preliminary investigation, police said, and further details are awaited.
