Dimapur: Wokha DC Vineet Kumar on Monday issued a fresh directive to regulate parking and ensure emergency access in Nagaland’s Wokha town, aiming to improve urban mobility, public safety, and disaster preparedness.
The order, issued as a continuation of an earlier notification, highlighted the urgent need for a regulated parking system due to the rapid increase in the number of vehicles and limited public space in the town.
Kumar noted that several commercial structures have emerged in recent years without adequate parking provisions for customers and staff.
As a result, he stated, public spaces are increasingly being misused for indiscriminate parking, causing severe traffic congestion, restricted pedestrian movement, and obstruction of emergency access routes. He stressed that the situation raises serious concerns regarding public safety, especially during accidents, natural disasters, or other emergencies where the timely movement of ambulances, fire services, and emergency response teams is critical.
To address these concerns, the district administration has called for immediate action, directing all private and commercial vehicle owners currently using public spaces for parking to make alternative arrangements within 45 days, with the deadline set for January 31, 2026.
The administration also advised prospective vehicle buyers to consider parking availability before making purchases.
It further instructed shopping complexes, commercial establishments, and all new constructions to incorporate adequate parking facilities within their premises.
The district administration directed the Wokha Town Council to review and streamline the approval process for new commercial structures under the Municipal Act to ensure compliance.
The order stated that authorities will strictly monitor parking along the National Highway passing through Wokha town starting February 1, 2026.
The administration will form a task force, including representatives from the administration, police, traffic department, town council, and transport office, to enforce this regulation.
In addition, the town council, in coordination with the traffic police, will undertake a comprehensive review of parking arrangements across all town roads.
The order added that the administration will take necessary steps to regulate and designate suitable parking zones, ensuring emergency vehicles can move without obstruction at all times.
