Guwahati: Uma Chetry from Assam’s Golaghat district, a one-day international and World Cup-winning member of the Indian womenโs cricket team, was felicitated at her residence in Bokakhat on Friday.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X, โApart from having an Olympic medalist, Assam now celebrates a World Cup winner in Uma Chetry. Her journey from Bokakhat to the international stage is notable. My best wishes to Uma.โ
The District Commissioner of Golaghat and the Superintendent of Police visited Umaโs home to congratulate her on her achievement.
Officials, including the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) of Bokakhat, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, the Circle Officer of Bokakhat Revenue Circle, and representatives from the Sports Department, also attended the ceremony.
Umaโs father, Lok Bahadur Chetry, told the media, โWe always knew Uma was determined, and seeing her achieve this milestone for India is significant for our family.โ Her mother, Deepa Chetry, added, โUmaโs achievement is supported by our village and the people of Assam, and we are thankful for their support.โ
Officials also met Umaโs parents and acknowledged their role in supporting her career. The district administration of Golaghat released a statement on Friday evening recognizing Umaโs contribution to Indian and Assam cricket.
Originally from Kandulimari village under the Bokakhat Revenue Circle, Uma Chetryโs progression from local cricket to the international level highlights her dedication and discipline and serves as an example for aspiring athletes.
