The Assam Congress on Tuesday held the BJP responsible for the recent two suicide incidents in Dhubri and Hojai districts allegedly following non-inclusion of names in the final draft National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) also alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was involved in a ‘planned political conspiracy’ for protecting illegal Hindu migrants in Assam.
While holding the BJP responsible for the suicide incidents in Dhubri and Hojai districts, APCC general secretary Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya told reporters here that one Deben Barman of Biskhowa village under Golakganj constituency in Dhubri had committed suicide on August 6 last allegedly following non-inclusion of his family members’ names in the final draft NRC.
Lashing out at the BJP-led Government at the Centre and the State, Bhattacharya during a press conference here on Tuesday said, “The BJP has been politicising the whole NRC update process since the beginning. The BJP has been using the NRC issue as a political agenda as Lok Sabha polls 2019 is nearing.”
Informing about another suicide incident, Bhattacharya said one Ranjan Das of Hojai also had committed suicide on Monday last as he missed his name in the final draft NRC.
While questioning the BJP Government about missing names of over 40 lakh people in the final draft NRC, Bhattacharya claimed “there is not a single illegal Bangladeshi in Assam’s Tinsukia district”.
“Missing of names of 1.80 lakh people in the final draft NRC in Tinsukia district is a matter of concern,” Bhattacharya said.
Demanding BJP’s national president Amit Shah to clear the party’s stand on the NRC, Bhattacharya said, “Contradictory statements among the BJP leaders have made it complex to understand the Government’s motive behind the NRC.”
“Update of the NRC on the basis of Assam Accord and the Government’s move to implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, both are confusing and contradictory stand of the BJP-led Government,” Bhattacharya added.
