Mizoram Government Aided School Association (MIGASA) has observed No Teaching Day on Friday demanding ad hoc status. They have planned to carry the No Teaching Day strike till August 17.

The strike had affected more than 3,000 students from 61 schools.

“Since the Mizoram government did nothing to improve the status of 61 schools, we are being forced to organise No Teaching Day. If our demands are not met by August 17, we will close these 61 schools indefinitely,” a press statement of the government schools association said.

The MIGASA said the government has been upgrading schools every five years since Mizoram union territory years but the present Congress government has upgraded just one school during the past ten years.

“These 61 schools have been waiting for twenty years to get ad hoc grant-in-aid status. The government has given us Rs 1.2 lakh annually to run these 61 schools. Its time the government takes education more seriously,” the MIGASA statement said.

At present there are 61 schools including 27 high schools in Mizoram which receive annual lumpsum grants. The association stated that most of the teachers who have been working for the past twenty years are hugely underpaid.
