Guwahati: Heavy security remained in place at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Wednesday as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) continued its protest, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged paper leak controversy.
A large contingent of Delhi Police personnel was deployed across the protest site to maintain law and order amid heightened tensions.
The developments came as fresh violence broke out in Connaught Place on Wednesday evening. According to Delhi Police, a group of unidentified miscreants allegedly attacked police personnel with stones and bottles near Tolstoy Marg around 8:30 pm, injuring ACP Connaught Place Vivek Bhagat.
Senior police officers rushed the injured officer to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital for treatment. Officials said the situation remained tense for a brief period before being brought under control.
Amid the ongoing protests, opposition MPs alleged that Delhi Police prevented them from meeting activist Sonam Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital.
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MP Mahua Majhi questioned the police action, saying the protest had continued for 22 days before the Parliament session began and asked why the delegation was barred from meeting Wangchuk. She claimed Wangchuk’s wife informed them that no court order prohibited visitors from meeting him.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Sanjay Yadav accused the government of ignoring students’ concerns and alleged that young people were bearing the consequences of its policies. He said the protest reflected widespread public anger over the handling of student issues and criticised the government’s response.
Meanwhile, activist Sonam Wangchuk reiterated that he would end his 25-day-long hunger strike only after receiving an assurance that no legal action would be initiated against the protesters.
