Police arrested the assistant director of SOS Children’s Village in Guwahati, on August 3 on charge of alleged sexual assault of three minor girls.

The shameful incident took place on the last day of a six-day leadership camp concluded recently at the village. The camp was organised by Rotaract Club of Guwahati.

The 44-year-old accused, who hails from Manipur, has been identified as Paukha Loon Vaiphei.

Talking to Northeast Now, the executive director of UTSAH, a child rights organisation, Miguel Queah, said, “I received an e-mail from one journalist called Lovely Sarkar about the incident on August 1. Some girl children were inappropriately touched by the assistant director Vaiphei in the SOS’s official car. Lovely was informed about the incident by some activists of Rotaract Club of Guwahati.”

Queah further said he dashed off a letter describing the incident to the Commissioner of Police Hiren Chandra Nath who immediately responded and informed Azara Police.

Queah said, “Hiren Nath asked me to lodge an FIR at the Azara Police Station. So on August 2 afternoon, I went to Azara Police Station and lodged an FIR. Representative of the Childline, Guwahati and Councillor of District Child Protection Unit accompanied me.”

“All the three girl children described the incident before Magistrate,” Queah said.

A case (No 486/18) under section 10 of the POSCO Act was registered at Azara Police Station.

Later, the accused was produced before District and Session Judge Court, Kamrup (Metro) and sent to jail.
