The No 1 Misamora village of Majuli, the river island district of Assam is facing severe erosion by the mighty Brahmaputra River during the second spate of flood this year.

More than half of the total 84 families in the villages have sought refuge in safer places away from the river bank for fear of erosion.

Dwelling houses and agricultural lands have been washed away by the fury of the over-flooded mighty Brahmaputra River.

On July 24 last, a minor was drowned into the overflowing Brahmaputra after falling into the river while playing when erosion took place in the river bank.

Notably, a sum of Rs 237 crore has been released to the Brahmaputra Board which looks after conservation of the river island district.

However, no concrete steps have been taken as yet to contain massive erosion in the river island district of Majuli.

As a result the hapless residents of Majuli are still living at the mercy of nature’s fury.
