Shillong: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has issued a 30-day ultimatum to the Meghalaya government to address seven key demands over drug menace, including the formation of a dedicated Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) police unit.

After a public rally in Motphran, HYC president Roykupar Synrem warned that if the government fails to meet the demands, a mass protest march to the secretariat will be organized.

“The government often gives assurances but fails to implement them,” Synrem said. “We won’t tolerate this anymore.”

The government has assured the HYC that it will take necessary steps, including setting up the ANTF and fast-track courts. A state-level meeting chaired by the Deputy Chief Minister will be held on November 14 to discuss these issues.

The HYC’s other demands include: treatment and rehabilitation facilities, increased number of detoxification, OST, and day care centers, free detoxification services, stricter investigation and prosecution under the NDPS Act, prevention of illicit trafficking under the PITNDPS Act, strengthening drug supply reduction strategies and establishment of an NCB office in Shillong.
