Agartala: A delegation of nine CPI(M) legislators on Monday met Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu and sought his intervention for a judicial inquiry into the death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar.
The delegation, headed by Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, submitted a memorandum requesting that the investigation be conducted under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court to ensure transparency and public confidence.
In the memorandum, the opposition MLAs said the death of the state’s senior-most police officer inside the Police Headquarters while on duty had raised serious public concerns. They argued that the nature and location of the incident made it necessary for the inquiry to be independent and credible.
The legislators noted that although the incident has been reported as a case of suicide, several questions continue to surround the circumstances of the death.
They said that, without drawing any conclusions, an impartial judicial inquiry was essential to establish the facts and dispel public doubts.
The memorandum stated that the office of the DGP is a key constitutional and administrative institution and that any unnatural death involving such a senior official has implications for public trust in governance and the criminal justice system.
The CPI(M) lawmakers urged the Governor to initiate constitutional measures for a judge-supervised inquiry with a broad mandate to examine the sequence of events leading to the death, the circumstances at the Police Headquarters, and any official or personal factors that may have contributed to the incident.
They also sought directions to preserve all material evidence, including forensic records, CCTV footage, electronic data, official communications and witness statements, to facilitate a fair and comprehensive investigation.
Besides Chaudhury, the delegation included Deputy Leader of Opposition Shyamal Chakraborty, CPI(M) Legislature Party Whip Nirmal Biswas, Md Islam Uddin, Dipankar Sen, Ashoke Mitra, Ramu Das, Shailendra Chandra Nath and Sudip Sarker.
