New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday stated that individuals holding a driving license for light motor vehicles (LMVs) are also eligible to drive transport vehicles with an unladen weight below 7,500 kilograms.
This decision was made by a five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.
The ruling aims to resolve disputes over insurance claims in accidents involving transport vehicles driven by LMV license holders.

Justice Hrishikesh Roy stated that the court’s interpretation will not compromise road safety, as the primary causes of accidents stem from non-compliance with seat belt rules, mobile usage, and driving under intoxication.
Justice Roy said, “This will also address the livelihood issues of drivers operating transport vehicles who clock maximum hours behind the wheels in transport vehicles below 7500 kg, with their LMV driving license…”
