Assam Manipur: 45-year-old farmer killed by lightning, two injured

Imphal: A 45-year-old farmer was killed while his wife and another person received severe injuries after being struck by lightning during a thunderstorm on Sunday in the southern parts of Manipur.

Officials on Monday said that the deceased was identified as Huidrom Nilakanta (45), a farmer by profession and a resident of Yangdong Awang Leikai in Kakching, Manipur.

He died on the spot when he was hit by a bolt of lightning while working at his paddy field at around 1:30 pm on Sunday.

His wife Romila, 40, who was working with her husband, however, escaped with injuries in the fury of the nature.

In a similar incident, another farmer later identified as one Lourembam Basant Singh (53) of Lourembam Maning Leikaiunder in Bishnupur district sustained grievous injuries after being struck by a thunderclap.

He was working at his paddy field when the lightning struck him at around 4 pm on Sunday.

Notably, on April 11, 2024, an 11-year-old boy Telem Suraj, lost his life after he was struck by lightning at the Agriculture Quarters under the Lamphel police station in Imphal west district, where he was playing to his maternal aunty’s quarter, the police said.

The lightning occurred when the boy was playing in an area of the Agriculture Quarters near the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Imphal.
