The students and the teachers of Shrimanta Shankar Academy Senior Secondary School in Guwahati observed World Environment Day in the school premises by planting 150 varieties of saplings on Tuesday.

One Care Luit organization donated a total of 120 varieties to the school authorities.

Physics teacher of the school Najrul Islam, also donated 30 saplings to the school in memory of his father.

Kamalakanta Nath, secretary to the Government of Assam, Transformation and Development department, Rajat Kamal award winner Utpal Borpujari and Kishore Jayanta Madhab, Rituraj Bora and Utpal Das of Care Luit were present at the programme.

As the theme for World Environment Day, 2018 is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, Principal Dr Geeta Dutta Baruah during her address appealed to the students of the school to reduce use of plastic and to make environment healthier.

Senior teacher Nilima Goswami emphasized the need for conservation of environment.

Speaking to Northeast Now, Dr Baruah said, “We have organized the plantation programme as part of the World Environment Day after the prayer assembly in the school.”

Further Dr Baruah informed that the teachers wore blue, green and brown colour dresses on the occasion to show respect to the nature.

A discussion on the need of conservation of environment was also organized for the students of class 5.
