AASU activists stage road blockade at Tangla Charali on Wednesday. Northeast Now

The Udalguri district unit of AASU has demanded action against the Bhergaon Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Barun Purkayastha for allegedly assaulting an activist of the students’ body.

A team of AASU headed by AASU assistant general secretary Jayanta Kr Bhattacharyya and Udalguri AASU president and General secretary Pranjal Patowary and Saiful Haque submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri,Dilip Das demanding strict disciplinary action against SDPO Purkayastha.

The police officer along with his guards allegedly assaulted the secretary of Tangla AASU, Rinku Deka on the night of May 8 last.

The memorandum narrating the entire incident alleged that ever since the IPS officer joined as Bhergaon SDPO there have been numerous incidents of physical and mental harassment on innocent Assamese youths by the top cop and he even threatened many of dire consequences.

The AASU organised a 3-hour road blockade at Tangla Charali on May 9 in protest against the incident and demanded disciplinary action against the officer. The organisation has also demanded that the PWD (IB) occupied by the Bhergaon SDPO be vacated with any delay.

A copy of memorandum was also forwarded to the Chief Minister, DGP, Assam Human Rights Commission; Superintendent of Police, Udalguri and Bhergaon SDO(C).

The students’ body has threatened to launch massive protests in the days to come if no actions are taken against the SDPO.
