Tripura government on Monday demolished at least a dozen of trade union offices under various political affiliations in Agartala.

The demolition drive started at 6 in the morning. A large posse of security personnel cordoned off the Old Motorstand area and blocked all routes before launching the demolition drive.

Trade union offices affiliated to various political parties including ruling BJP, Congress and CPI-M were constructed illegally on the government land. Some small shops were also built on the land.

DM West Tripura Dr Milind Ramteke along with SP West Tripura Ajit Pratap Singh, Commissioner of Agartala Municipal Corporation Dr Sailesh Singh and other senior officials were present on the spot to supervise the demolition drive.

Congress on Sunday warned the government not to bulldoze its office whereas CPI-M sought some more time.

The district administration had given seven days’ notice to remove the offices and shops from the area.
