Kuladhar Saikia will be next Director General of Assam Police. Saikia, an IPS cadre of 1985 batch is currently posted as Special DG of Law & Order with ADG rank. Saikia will retire in 2019.

Saikia, an alumnus of Delhi School of Economics, Pennsylvania State University, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati is also a recipient of Sahitya Akademi award.

Born in 1959, Kuladhar Saikia had his Post Graduation from Delhi School of Economics after which he was teaching Economics for a while in the Hindu College, Delhi University. He worked as an officer of the Indian Economic Service in Planning Commission,New Delhi and then also as Indian Railway Traffic Service officer for a short while before joining the Indian Police Service in 1985.

He was in the Pennsylvania State University, USA doing a course on Leadership and Management and a Research Program on Community Development and management of resources during 2000-2001 as a prestigious Fullbright Fellow. He also worked as a Consultant in the World Bank,Washington for a brief period. He has earned high appreciation through initiation of “Project Prahari”- a community development and policing project launched in August 2001 to fight against social prejudices, economic isolation and militancy in the remote tribal villages. He was awarded President’s police medals twice for his outstanding contribution to policing. As a police head of the Guwahati city he had introduced in July,1996 the model of community policing through formation of people’s committees, termed as Nagarik Samities.

The State Security Commission (SSC) in Assam on Monday submitted a panel of names to the state government for selection and appointment of the state’s next director-general of police. Incumbent police chief Mukesh Sahay will retire on April 30.

Kuladhar Saikia’s wife Leena Sarma is Indian Railway Service officer. She is GM with Centre for Railway Information Systems in New Delhi. Their only son is doing M Phil in Delhi University.
