In a shocking incident, Sahimoon Bibi, a 45 years old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself due to fear of NRC verification process Wednesday morning at ward no 10 of Dhubri town.

Sahimoon Bibi was reportedly facing problems in producing the necessary documents required for updating the NRC.

The deceased originally hailed from Muzzafarpur district of Bihar and was working as helping hands here in the nearby households for her livelihood. She was under tremendous pressure since last couple of months due to the NRC verification process in the state.

Ashma Khatun, sister of the deceased has alleged that Sahimoon Bibi had received a notice from the Foreigner’s Tribunal Court, Dhubri and had been running from pillar to post to get the legal documents to prove her citizenship. Since Sahimoon Bibi was a daily wage earner, it was also getting a difficult task for her to pay the fee of the lawyer.

Her names along with her six siblings did not figure in the part-draft of NRC. This left her in a state of mental agony.

Khairul Islam, husband of the deceased said that although she had visited her parents in Muzzafarpur district of Bihar to receive some documents regarding her legacy data, she could not get any response from there either. And accordingly she fell mentally sick and had to be admitted to Dhubri Civil Hospital earlier.

The deceased along with her husband was residing on a non-functional railway track by encroaching it at Ward No 10 of Dhubri town. Her husband is a street vendor.

Meanwhile, Dhubri police recovered the body and investigation is on.

“It will be premature to ascertain the actual cause of her death as the entire matter is under investigation,” Jayanta Das, Town Sub-Inspector of Dhubri Sadar Police Station told Northeast Now.
