The students’ community of Karimganj district in Assam are suffering immensely for past many months as most of the teachers in several schools across the district are engaged in the process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
In one such instance, the 1166 Ahmedabad LP School at Ratabari in Karimganj district of the Barak valley in Assam has virtually remained closed for the past few months as the head teacher Anup Kairi and the assistant teacher Jhumra Begam have been absent from a long time.

This has led to serious anxiety among the guardians over the future of their wards.
Though the locals have protested over the matter, no corrective action has been taken yet by the local officials of the education department or the civil administration.
Meanwhile, the guardians of the students of the said school met the Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj and submitted a memorandum in this regard seeking his intervention.

The head teacher always tries to justify his absence in the pretext of NRC duty.
Locals have alleged that the assistant teacher also hardly comes to school for unknown reasons.
The guardians have alleged that whenever they are requested to take classes regularly, the teachers always give NRC as excuse.
The guardians have also mentioned in the memorandum about irregularity in providing mid-day meal in the school.
They have alleged that the teachers do not care about the nutrition of the pupils.
Ironically, only recently a medical team came to the school for general health check-up of the students, but they returned without examining the students due to the absence of the teachers.
The president of school managing committee Monir Uddin, vice president Faruk Uddin and others have also appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to take bold actions against these irregularities.
It is indeed pathetic that when a rickshaw puller Ahmed Ali become a pride for not only Karimganj , but for the entire nation, through his initiative in establishing schools, schools like this one remain neglected because of apathy of the teachers.
