The students of Bajali College on Thursday took out a silent protest rally throughout Pathsala town in Barpeta district in protest against increasing number of cases of rape and killing.
The protesters participated in the rally by displaying banners and placards which read as ‘Don’t Tell Me How to Dress’, ‘Tell Them Not To Rape’, ‘There is No Place for Rapist in Our country’, ‘We Don’t Want to Save Her, We Want How to Stand by her side’ etc.
The activists of Pratyasha ‘A Ray of New Hope’ organised the silent protest programme where the members of Bajali College Students’ Union (BCSU) participated. In the programme, the protestors demanded the government to promulgate stringent law against the rapists.
The protestors said, “Women are not safe in our country; nowadays it is difficult to go outside. Crime against women occurs every day in India. In view of the increasing number of crimes against women in Assam, stricter law should be formulated in Assam too as Arunachal Pradesh.”
It may be mentioned that Arunachal Pradesh recently became the fourth State in the country to pass a legislation approving the death penalty for child rape.
The Criminal Laws (Arunachal Pradesh) Amendment Bill-2018 was passed by unanimous voice vote in the Arunachal Pradesh State Assembly by all the members present. The development in this regard follows a series of incidents where the public resorted to vigilante justice to punish alleged child rapists.
Similar legislations were earlier approved by the BJP-ruled State in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.
