The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Saturday demanded resignation of Shamator-Chessore MLA S Keoshu Yimchunger to uphold the credentials of the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC) before the people and for betraying the Congress party.

Pradesh Congress president K Therie, in a release, said the Congress agreed with the YTC not to field its candidate in the byelection to Shamator-Chessore Assembly constituency in October last year as the ruling alliance in the state assured to upgrade Shamator sub-division to the district if the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) candidate Yimchunger was returned uncontested in the by-poll.

The NDPP candidate was elected unopposed in the byelection which amounts to paying in advance for the promise, the NPCC said.

โ€œWe have trusted YTC and refrained from filing nominations in support of Shamatorโ€™s upgradation to a districtโ€, Therie said.

The YTC launched an indefinite agitation on January 3 demanding the creation of Shamator district out of Tuensang district.

Therie said the ruling allianceโ€™s promise was taken as a sincere and honest commitment. โ€œSuch dishonesty is not expected from an experienced chief minister,โ€ he added.

The NPCC said the unrest created in the minds of the Yimkhiung community in the matter of granting the district to Shamator is the result of a commitment without application of mind.

โ€œThe government is in the know that there has been a history of over 35 years between Yimkhiung and Tikhir. Therefore unmindfully, they have committedโ€, it said.

The Pradesh Congress said as such, the formation of a third-party committee to negotiate with the civil society organisations is with the intent to delay and shift the responsibilities. The state cabinet on Friday decided to constitute a third-party committee to deliberate on the issue of the creation of the Shamator district.
