Assam on Friday witnessed a massive jump in Covid-19 cases prompting the authorities to impose fresh curbs in the state.

According to the NHM health bulletin, Assam on Friday reported a total of 1167 new cases, almost double from the previous day, and two deaths.

Kamrup (M) district, which primarily comprises Guwahati city, recorded 517 new cases during the day, a sharp rise from 279 and 190 cases respectively on Wednesday and Tuesday.

The day’s positivity rate was 3.32 per cent, higher than the 1.29 per cent the previous day.

Covid-19 claimed four lives on Wednesday, with two deaths reported from Tinsukia and one each from Barpeta and Sonitpur. The total death toll in the state has touched 6,176 with the death rate remaining at 0.99 per cent.

 Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the third wave of the pandemic along with the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has hit the state from January 1.

He said that now the government will treat all Covid cases as patients of the highly infectious new variant.

 At least seven more people, including a foreign returnee, have tested positive for the Omicron variant of Covid in Assam, taking the tally of the new strain to nine, an official said on Friday.
