The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has directed the Dibrugarh district administration to initiate an inquiry into the harassment and atrocity allegations on police by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in Dibrugarh.
The Commission after it took suo-moto cognizance of allegations and the reports being published in media issued a notice to the district administration.
The AHRC has asked the Dibruharh district administration to file the detailed report within one month.

The AHRC in the order said, “It is also alleged that the SP-led police team brutally beat up members of AASU and subjected them to inhuman torture during custody who were picked up on December 25 and later arrested five among them in connection with a college election related fight.”
The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) had demanded strict actions against Dibrugarh’s Superintendent of Police Shwetank Mishra accusing him of assaulting AASU workers without any valid reason in Dibrugarh.

AASU’s president, Dipanka Nath said, “There should be strict actions against the SP under law as he had assaulted several AASU workers in the district with no valid reason.”
Nath alleged that the SP had “picked-up” several workers from the Swahid Bhawan including some students who did not even belong to the AASU only to assault them.
